Many Americans don’t get enough sleep, nor do they consume enough vitamins and minerals. A new study conducted by Pharmavite LLC, a dietary supplements company, says the two might be connected.

Researchers analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). They saw that US adults who got less than seven hours of sleep a night consumed lower amounts of important vitamins and minerals than those who got seven or more hours of sleep a night.

More specifically, the research team found that these sleep-deprived individuals lacked vitamins A, D, and B1, as well as minerals magnesium, niacin, calcium, zinc, and phosphorus.

This study suggests a link between insufficient sleep and poor nutrition. Researchers say that individuals with a shorter sleep duration might benefit from incorporating more of these nutrients into their diet.
