Binge drinking in our teens can lead to anxiety later in life.

Researchers from University of Illinois at Chicago discovered that binge drinking in adolescence increases our risk of developing a mental illness, like anxiety, later in life. This is true even if we stop the bad habit while still in adolescence.

This study exposed adolescent rats to alcohol, on and off, over a course of 14 days. Researchers found that these rats displayed anxious behavior in their adult lives, even when the binge drinking regimen ceased in late adolescence.

Researchers say exposure to alcohol in adolescence comes with long-lasting effects. These individuals are at a greater risk of suffering from mental health issues later.
