The clock turns to 9:02, and Suzie knows she’s going to be late. It wasn’t her fault her husband snoozed her alarm. She sprints to the car, coffee in hand. But before she gets there, she trips over their cat. Her coffee spills everywhere. Cursing, she slams the car door and speeds to work. But the day is just getting started. On the interstate, a car cuts her off without even using their blinker. She punches the car horn a few times and veers around them. Finally, at work, she beelines it to her desk to drop some papers off before running to the meeting she’s almost late too. Of course, her assistant comes up and asks her if she could sign something. She doesn’t have time for this right now! Red blurs her vision and when she responds, it’s a yell.

What’s the Deal with Anger?

Anger is as much of the human psyche as fear or joy are. It has its place in the world, but only when it’s managed in a healthy way. Otherwise, the consequences effects more than the people around us, it affects us too!

Uncontrolled anger can take over our thoughts, emotions, and bodies. The physical effects are some of the most harmful, and an include:

  • Increased blood pressure
  • Liver and kidney damage
  • High cholesterol
  • Increased risk of coronary artery disease
  • Increased risk of a heart attack

But if anger is an emotion, how does it affect our body? Like many physiological phenomena, it all comes down to hormones. The “flight or fight” response releases stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline and is activated by anger. Neither cortisol nor adrenaline is innately bad, they’re actually crucial for our survival! So is anger. But long-term, these emotions and hormones begin to tear the body apart.

On a short-term timeline, angry thoughts and emotions can make their mark too. Studies have shown that anger is linked with depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. It increases the likelihood of failed relationships and strains interactions at work.

The wonderful thing about the body and mind is that it can relearn, heal, and grow. Anger is controllable. Although anger management is difficult and can be confusing, Thriveworks Franklin is here to walk beside you as you grow and heal.

Our counselors stress that just because someone struggles with anger does not mean they are a “bad” person or have weak will power! Anger levels do not equate to your worth or capacity to succeed. All it means is a few more coping methods might be needed, which is exactly what Thriveworks Franklin is here to give.

Do I Really Need Anger Management?

Insight and Support

★★★★★
I was pleased with the quick and easy access to services through the Thriveworks website. My own HMO had a long process and wait list during these times of Covid. I chose Jane Eagles to work with because I wanted a mature therapist with lots of experience. She was able to tune right into my situation and my goals for the sessions. She raised great questions for me to consider and always took time to reiterate the main takeaways of our time together. I appreciated her wisdom and clarity as well as her sense of humor.

Opened a New World of Healing

★★★★★
I can't speak any more highly of Thriveworks. Mikkah has truly been such an important person in my life since I started coming to therapy. I was skeptical at first, knowing that "the first therapist you see may not be the right 'fit' for you," but I was lucky enough to have immediately clicked with Mikkah. It took a bit of time for me to really open up and start to dig deep in my own emotion, but Mikkah was so patient and made me feel so comfortable. She truly has helped me identify a lot of different things I was feeling, but couldn't understand why. I originally came to therapy for adult ADD, recommended by my PCP, but I used therapy as a healthy outlet to start talking about things I have experienced that has caused my mental clarity to fog. Mikkah has truly been such a savior in my life and I can't express my gratitude I have for her. She is extremely professional but makes me feel so comfortable talking about literally anything - almost like we've been best friends for years, even though I just met her a few short months ago. I am so happy with how my therapy is going and I always leave a session feeling better than how I went in. Thank you Thriveworks and thank you especially to Mikkah! You are incredible!!

Jim Gardner helped me immensely

★★★★★
Jim helped me get through a rough patch in my life. He has a lot of wisdom from his past and his experience as a gay man. I came to him crying everyday and mopey, and by the end I had really seen a huge change in my overall mental health. I was not in the area for very long and he was excellent at making sure I got as much as possible from my limited number of sessions. I would absolutely recommend him to people in their early twenties struggling with their transition into adulthood as well as anyone struggling with general anxiety and depression. jó, én hiányozni fogom!
