“Children are great imitators, so give them something great to imitate”
– Author Unknown

Parents are the greatest influence in a child’s life. Growing in their parents’ environment year after year, a child adapts to their parents’ biased such as traditions, morals, values and belief system. Children also learn attitudes of acceptance in which their viewpoints allow them to explore new experiences and become their own identity. Parenting styles can influence how children decipher information and communicate. Though there are external sources that impact how a child may perceive their worldview such as media, school, friends, and church, a parent has the biggest impression because they are the most consistent figure in their life.

The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development states parents are generally responsible for the following:

  • Keeping children safe
  • Listening to children and spending time with them
  • Providing affection, order and consistency
  • Setting and enforcing limits
  • Monitoring their children’s friendships
  • Seeking help for any medical or behavioral concerns

“It is not what you do for your children, but what you have taught them to do for themselves that will make them successful human beings”
– Ann Landers

In the mist of physical, emotional and spiritual growth, children try to take on the role of independency even when they are not exactly ready. Challenges that parents often face the most is communication with their children. Its important for parents to consider the developmental stage and maturity level when interacting with them. This is how a parent can properly teach their children in a mindset that the child can comprehend and understand. When children have a hard time understanding what their parent is trying to convey, they may feel frustrated and annoyed, which can lead to thoughts that they are disappointing when they prefer their parent’s approval. Circumstances such as this can negatively impact their self-esteem which could be harbored into adulthood. For new parents, it may be hard to know the effective ways to communicate or even how to discipline a child. It can be confusing, but that is why we are here! Thriveworks Review

★★★★★
I have been meeting with Greg Miller since February. His kindness, compassion and down to earth approach has helped me to achieve positive changes for my mental well-being. Meeting with Greg each week has allowed me to discuss problems both big and small and to feel more secure with my self-agency, to feel acceptance in my relationships, and to work on myself (self-confidence, career goals, etc.). I highly recommend Greg (as well as Thrive-works) to any individual seeking mental health services.

Collin Meyer

★★★★★
I met Collin Meyer less than 5 years ago and in that short time, I have come to know him as a man of incredible integrity and many, many talents. What sets Collin apart from so many other people is his willingness to share his talents and our non profit has been the recipient of that generosity. He has a great sense of humor and deep respect for the beliefs of others.

Beyond a “therapist”

★★★★★
I cannot say enough wonderful things about Rachel. I've been in therapy for most of my (talking) life, and only she has helped me, connected with me, cooperated with me, guided me, in a way I never thought possible. There is a Hebrew word, "Bashe'rt" - It roughly means, "meant to be". Our meeting was Bashe'rt. She was the light during a very dark time and continues to be the torch leading the way. Rachel is first and foremost, genuine and kind. She remembers just about everything (so no need to repeat yourself), she has a great sense of humor, which balances perfectly with her professionalism, and counseling expertise. Yet, she is also very compassionate and understanding. She makes me feel safe, even if we do a tele-session. If I'm feeling overwhelmed in any way, she is able to help me ground myself and relax, in under 3 minutes. Seriously. She's THAT good. There is a rating scale below, asking to rate 1-5 *... 5 being the best option, yet not a nearly high enough number to rate Rachel. (On a completely different note, the building's bathrooms are "meh". I just suggest pre-bathrooming before you come for a session.)
