According to Matt Kocaj, of 37 Signals, “When you’re new to something, all the pain is out in the open. You stub your toes until they’re black and blue on things the veterans have all learned to avoid. This is both a curse and a gift.”
However, Matt also brings up an important point for beginners. Beginners have one priceless advantage! That is, while the veterans are well acclimated to the way things are, beginners benefit from their fresh perspectives.
Beginners can look at a situation and more easily say “It might make more sense if things were done this way…”
As a beginner, don’t underestimate your value and importance to an old sport, hobbie, industry, club — or whatever you’re the novice at. Enjoy being green–you’ll be old hat soon enough.
