We All Could Learn How To Relax From Stress

Stress is simply a fact of nature, forces from the outside world affecting the individual. Sometimes stress can be positive (excitement, opportunity, or better performance in athletic events). Other times stress may have a more negative effect (intense pressure, muscle tightness, or anxiety and nervousness). Your body responds to stress similar to a physical threat. This response can result in: increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, quickened breathing, muscle tightening, and increased perspiration.

Relaxation Training is one method for gaining self-control over the autonomic nervous system (which affects heart rate, digestion, respiration rate, salivation, and perspiration). Such control has the effects of reducing heart rate, blood pressure, adrenaline flow, digestive acid flow, perspiration, and many other physiological and subjective effects of anxiety and stress. It is impossible to be both anxious and relaxed at the same time.

Below are some common relaxation training techniques used in therapy. Have you ever used these methods to relax when you are stressed?

  • Controlled Abdominal Breathing
  • Progressive Muscle Relaxation
  • Calming Mental Thoughts or Attitudes
