“When you are angry or frustrated, what comes out?
Whatever it is, it’s a good indication of what you’re made of.” H. Jackson Brown, Jr.
Let’s face it, at some point we all get a little emotional. However, many of us can have a difficult time identifying what we are feeling, let alone finding a way to express it. Many times we find ourselves stuffing, overacting, or struggling to deal with our emotions on a daily basis. Not learning how to identify, process, and communicate your feelings in a healthy way can lead to unsuccessful coping patterns. These coping patterns can turn toxic and lead to unhealthy behaviors (i.e. addictions, obsessions, depression, and anxiety) as you try to avoid dealing with your emotions.
Learning how to identify and express your emotions is vital when it comes to staying mentally healthy.
One of the first ways to do this is identify what you are feeling. Attached is a sheet that can help you move past the “Doh” moment and find other words to describe your feelings and their intensity. Through the process of therapy, your counselor will work with you in developing new methods to identify, express, and communicate your feelings in healthy ways.
While the last sentence in the above quote reads as a statement, I would rephrase it as a question: “Is what comes out a good indication of what your made of?” Finding healthy ways to express your emotions can play a big part in helping others understand how you truly feel inside.
