Chiropractor Credentialing

I am opening a chiropractic practice in Fort Collins, CO this spring. I will be graduating from school in about 7 weeks. I understand that I need to be licensed before any work can be done to get on insurance panels. I will have my license at the middle to end of May, 2013. I have decided to use a credentialing service as soon as I receive my license.

My questions are:

1. How do I know what insurance providers are the major ones in Fort Collins?
2. How long does it usually take to be credentialed?
3. What needs to be done on my part to get started?

Congratulations on nearing graduation! You are correct that you do need to be licensed as a chiropractor before getting networked / credentialed with insurance companies. However, you’re smart to start thinking ahead. I’ll answer your questions below.

1. How do I know what insurance providers are the major ones in Fort Collins?

This is a good question. When you sign up, a specialist from your credentialing team will do some research for you. But in general, for a city like Fort Collins, the major companies will be primarily the big national companies: Blue Cross / Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, United Heathcare, Tricare, Medicare, Humana, Value Options, Magellan, Multiplan, and a number of others. There may also be some area-specific smaller companies, that the team you hire can find for you.

2. How long does it usually take to be credentialed?

The process usually takes between 90-120 days (3-4 months). Just to be clear, that’s waiting on the insurance companies 🙂

3. What needs to be done on my part to get started?

Very little. Your credentialing team will take care of just about everything!
