The World Health Organization‘s “I had a black dog, his name was depression video” has passed 4,000,000 views on Youtube, and may reach 5,000,000 by the end of the year.

The video depicts the common mood disorder in a relatable way; as an oversized, overbearing, twist on man’s best friend.
Using the concept of the black dog The video shows the different ways depression can effect a persons everyday life.

It’s difficult not to empathize with the simple message and well chosen images.

Depression can effect appetite. While many people overeat, some people find it difficult to find an appetite.

Simple physical tasks, like getting dressed or going for a walk can feel like Herculean efforts.

The video also provides advice on overcoming depression: from meditation, to keeping a mood journal, to counseling.
In the end, one may find that depression has helped them to learn something about themselves.
