If you’re gaining weight, your fat consumption is likely to blame.
In an effort to pinpoint what diet components cause weight gain, researchers from the University of Aberdeen fed 30 mice different diets that varied in fat, carbs, and protein.
The team measured changes in body weight during the duration of this experiment and found that fat was the only component that contributed to weight gain.
According to the researchers, diets high in carbs did not lead to weight gain, nor did diets high in sugar. Additionally, diets high in sugar and fat did not have a greater impact than fat alone.
Because mice and humans share similarities in physiology and metabolism, researchers say these findings indicate that high-fat diets may be the sole cause of weight gain in humans too. This, in stark contrast with the popular idea that a high fat, low carb diet leads to weight loss.
