What are the hardest parts of mental health billing?

We talked to the Senior Medical Biller at Thriveworks, Alicia Potts, and she gladly shared her knowledge with us.

The hardest part for providers conducting mental health billing is finding a software provider/ vendor that will submit your insurance claims (clearing house). Each insurance company requires different hoops to jump through – some do not accept paper claims, some only accept electronic claims, etc…

Time management becomes a major issue when you are trying to see patients and file insurance claims. It takes time to learn what diagnosis codes work, and even where to submit the claim.

Quick Lesson

Even worse, there are multiple addresses for each department, and it is hard to know what department to send it to. After getting the claim filled out, you then must find the correct department. If you happen to send the claim to the wrong department, it will reject. It can become very frustrating if you send the claim, and then 30 days later you find out the claim was denied because you sent it to the wrong department.

It is not an easy process. It is very important in terms of auditing when conducting billing to make sure that you are doing it correctly.
