Hello,

I saw the announcement for your Aug. 15th Webinar regarding private practice startups which I plan to attend. I am a new licensed graduate professional counselor (LGPC) in the state of Maryland under supervision, and I am putting together a part-time practice while still employed by an agency.

Do you know if as an LGPC, I am eligible to be a provider for any insurance companies? Blue Cross already told me they do not recognize the LGPC credential and I wondered if in your experience other companies feel the same way. I’d appreciate any insight you might have.

Thanks!

Greetings Deborah,

Unfortunately, counselors who are still in their intermediate licensure phase (under supervision) are generally ineligible to accept insurance. Sometimes they are able to see some clients with insurance (a limited number of insurance companies) if they work for a hospital or community mental health center. As a general rule, counselors are eligible for insurance credentialing once they are fully licensed.

I hope this helps!

Sincerely,
Anthony
