Peachtree City Self-Harm Counseling

Counseling for Self-Harm and Cutting—Therapists in Peachtree City, GA

Liam is going into eighth grade. He makes straight As and has perfect attendance, even though his parents just went through a messy divorce. Kylie is a few months into her first full-time job, and she already feels drained and stuck. Ed is in his 60s and wants to retire. However, he will most likely be working another decade if not more. Ed, Kylie, and Liam have far more in common than it seems. They each have distinct and different stressors in their lives, but they are each handling them in the same way—through cutting. Many people struggle with self-harm: men and women—young, middle-aged, and old. For those who injure their own bodies to cope with emotional pain, they might just be doing the best they know how to survive.

“It was a way of expressing my own shame of myself on my own body. I was matching the inside to the outside. And there were sometimes where my emotions were just so built up, I didn’t know what to do…” –Demi Lovato

Can you resonate with what Demi describes? Many people can. They may be feeling intense psychological pain and have no idea how to process it. Often, people who cut have experienced victimization, trauma, abuse, poverty, and more. Self-harm may be the only way they know how to express their experiences.

“When we know better, we do better” is an old cliché, but in many ways, it is true. Cutting may be the only way some people know how to communicate about their pain, but when they know better, they often do better. Many people are learning new, better ways of processing psychological pain.

If you are ready to learn a new way of coping, you are not alone. Thriveworks Peachtree City is seeing more and more clients who are doing just that—walking away from self-harm and walking toward healthy coping skills. Our professionals understand that journey and are ready to help.

The Signs and Symptoms of Self-Harm

Cutting is probably the form of self-harm that gets the most attention, but there are many ways people can participate in self-injury, including excessive tattooing, branding, carving, scratching, burning, and pinching oneself. Some people may sabotage their body’s healing process—picking scabs or stitches. Others may pull out their hair by the first-full. Some people participate in this harm when they feel particularly stressed. Others have a routine of self-harm that they perform daily, weekly, or monthly.

Because the form of self-harm can vary so much, so can the signs and symptoms that people display. When people display the following, they may be coping through self-injury:

  • Recent wounds: burns, scratches, cuts, or bruises.
  • Even on a hot day, wearing long pants and sleeves.
  • Access to or possession of weapons that may be used in the injury.
  • Expressing questions about their identity and their worth.
  • Toxic or hard relationships with friends, teachers, family, bosses, and more.
  • Behavior that is unpredictable or impulsive.
  • Feeling of hopelessness, worthlessness, or helplessness.

What Are the Causes of Self-Injuring Behavior?

The particular circumstances that surround when, why, and how people begin cutting are usually unique, personal, and tender. One common thread that is strung through almost every case of self-injury is psychological pain. The pain is often the result of trauma. Experiencing child abuse, neglect, poverty, domestic violence, and more may put people at a greater risk of self-harm.

When people experience trauma, they often also experience intense emotions. Feelings such as guilt, anger, panic, self-hatred, worthlessness, confused sexuality, and/or rejection may plague them. Self-harm may be the only way they know how to cope with their experiences and these emotions. Although it does not offer complete healing, self-harm may offer people…

  1. Some way to express their experiences.
  2. A diversion from their suffering.
  3. The feeling of control over their pain.
  4. The experience of an emotion different than numbness.

A momentary feeling of relief may accompany self-harm, but in the long-term, the psychological pain returns. In many cases, the long-term effect of self-harm is to increase a person’s discomfort instead of relieving their symptoms.

If Your Loved One Self-Injures

Many people suspect that their loved one may be coping through self-harm and wonder how they can help. While no one can change another person or force another person to pursue recovery, loved one can play an important part in the healing process. Usually, expressing love and care are the most simple but most powerful ways to help. If you think your loved one may be cutting or suing another form of self-harm…

  • Give them the opportunity to speak without questioning, interrupting, or judging them. If you loved one offers any information, offer an empathetic ear. Allow them to set the pain for what they disclose and why.
  • Voice your love and support. Let your loved one know that you care for them. If they are pursuing recovery or interested in recovery, offer support in ways that you feel comfortable.

Stephanie Mezei

★★★★★
I have known Stephanie for over six years and worked side by side with her in a mental health center for part of that time. What comes across first and foremost is her caring and concern for her clients and her determination to see that their needs are met. She brings to her work a wide range of experience and training along with confidence that is reassuring and a comfort to those in distress. She can deal calmly with the most severe issues as well as with problems of daily living. In the time that I've known her, she has been licensed in three different states to practice in a variety of settings. If you come to her in a time of need, in a time of emotional upheaval or difficult questions, I don't think you will find a more competent or more caring therapist.

A game changer for me!!

★★★★★
Without going on an on, but I may - - I feel that Stacey Franklin, my counselor, is literally the best kept secret (that I will not keep a secret) if you haven't met her - and if you have not been to Thriveworks yet, than that is the second best kept secret. Thriveworks is the most incredible counseling place that I have ever been to - when you walk in - it offers such a tranquil and serene atmosphere, where every counselor greets you with a very welcoming spirit. I have been to multiple counselors throughout my life, in multiple states, and it is without hesitation that this environment is incredible. When you call to schedule an appointment to meet with a counselor, they work really hard to try and match you with a counselor that best fits the struggles that you are going through - but at any point during your counseling sessions, if you feel that the match may not be perfect - they want you to be honest so that they can try and fix it, or match you with someone that may be a better fit for you within the practice or refer you to someone they know outside of the practice. That is what an amazing practice and counselor should do! Stacey is by far the BEST counselor I have every worked with. She is genuine, honest, skilled, raw, empathetic, compassionate, pneumatic, accepting, flexible, communicable, my safe place, and so VERY kind. Her aura is something I have never seen before and although I am on a life journey of discovery and acceptance, I am so thankful for her to be on this journey with me because I do not know what I would have done with out her. If you are reading this review and are wondering if this is the place for you - I challenge you to give it a shot - it was a life changer for me.

Therapy that doesn’t feel like therapy.

★★★★★
At first, I was very apprehensive about therapy, but after my session with Mrs. Pinckney I feel more confident about it. She is so easy to talk to and relatable. I felt that she was genuinely understanding and invested in the process of healing. It was like talking to a friend. Like I said previously, at first I didn't even want to go, but after talking with her for an hour, I didn't want my session to end. I'm actually looking forward to our next visit.

We Just LOVE Gem

★★★★★
I have been taking my daughter to see Gem for right at a year now, and I couldn't be more happy. Finding the "right" person for your child is not always easy, but from day one Gem was able to develop a rapport with my daughter, and build a trusting and safe relationship with her. My daughter looks forward to her sessions, and actually has asked if she could go every day! We've seen much progress from our daughter and are so thankful we found Gem.

Algem is Great!

★★★★★
Thriveworks has a very professional, relaxing environment. The aromatherapy, the fountain, the entertainment in the waiting room. Everyone is helpful. I am greeted and it is made sure that I am seen promptly. At the same time, my appointment does not seem rushed. I feel that Algem is genuinely concerned about my health and well-being. We have good, fun, authentic conversation in session and she has made herself available to me anytime. Algem texts me and checks on me, and remembers upcoming things I may be encountering. In addition, she has let me know that sessions can be made affordable if I need to come in during this interim time when I have no insurance.

Wonderful experience and very helpful

★★★★★
I started going to Throveworks for help with anxiety and guidance on some difficult life decisions. I had nothing but the best experience working with Marissa on my issues. She was extremely professional, yet so easy to talk to. At times it really felt like I was just talking to one of my girlfriends rather than attending a session. She helped me talk through differentenarios to help me with my decision making and gave me some great ideas for managing my anxiety. I highly reccommend and Marissa specifically if anyone is thinking of seeking counseling or help on any important issues.

Sense of peace

★★★★★
IT HELPS! The stigmatism of my heritage (African American) that therapy is something we don’t do is so obsolete. I am both thankful and extremely grateful that I am able to experience a level of counseling that has enlighten me to think and react to things in a positive way that fosters growth. The coaching and therapy sessions I’ve experience through Stacy and her counselors at Thriveworks-Peachtree City has provided me with reassurance towards handling any stressors regarding my job and family life. So many times we get caught up with taking care of others that we don’t take care of ourselves. Honestly, how are we to take care of our loved ones and be that good friend if we are not mentally prepared to do so. Let’s face it, life can be all consuming. The day in/day out rituals can be a lot to bear and we face many challenges. I’m so happy I wasn’t reluctant to make use of their services/solutions to my emotional hurdles. Stacy, Algem and Jill have been fantastic! It’s like speaking with your best friend or family member, but they don’t judge you. Thanks so much and I look forward to continued growth through Thriveworks-Peachtree City!

★★★★★
Having a counselor that is positive, patient and focused is a blessing. Algem is beyond fantastic and always goes above and beyond for her clients.

Non-Responsive!

★☆☆☆☆
Good luck trying to get an appointment with these people. I filled out the online form... no response. So I called the office and left a voicemail. It's now the next day and I still have not heard back, so I started an Online Chat... after being on hold for 40 minutes, I gave up. Obviously they are too busy to schedule appointments; I will be trying a different provider.
