Teen Social Anxiety and Social Skills Group in Charlottesville, VA
Social communication is at the core of connection in every stage of life and it can be most challenging to navigate during adolescence. As a teenager, your relationships with peers are your number one priority and cultivating healthy relationships stems from good self-esteem along with an understanding of social dynamics. Some adolescents lack social connections due to social anxiety which is characterized by pervasive feelings of worry that others will judge or evaluate them negatively. Others have minimal connection due to a lack of social awareness or missing out on cues of how to behave socially.
Teen Social Anxiety and Social Skills Group provides teens an opportunity to connect with others who are struggling to make and maintain positive relationships. In this group, we discuss self-worth, values and ways that we can improve our social communication. Afton Cordoba, LPC is the facilitator of this group and she has worked with teens as a mental health counselor and school counselor since 2009. Afton incorporates evidenced-based strategies from CBT (cognitive behavior therapy) and mindfulness to help teens be more aware of their thoughts and cope with uncomfortable feelings and social situations. The main goal of this group is to provide a safe place where teens can explore their social struggles and support one another in personal growth. Email aftonc@thriveworks.com for more information.
