Mariel Andersen

Mariel Andersen, Intern in Practice

Our clinical intern, Mariel Andersen, is earning her second Master’s degree in clinically-focused social work at Virginia Commonwealth University. Mariel earned her first Master’s degree in clinical psychology from the University of Maryland in 2019, where her capstone project focused on social support during young adulthood transitions. At the University of Virginia, Mariel majored in Cognitive Science while working in research labs examining perception, judgment, virtual reality, and social relationships.

Mariel has provided therapeutic services in diverse contexts, including intensive inpatient treatment, therapeutic residential care, and virtual crisis intervention. Much of her work has focused on alleviating distress associated with depression, anxiety, ADHD, and trauma, as well as more general identity concerns, coping issues, social struggles, and performance problems. Her work with children, adolescents, and young adults focuses on the emotional and social features unique to each developmental stage.

Mariel draws from her strong research background to offer evidence-based practices for a variety of presenting problems. She balances this clinical knowledge with a humanistic, non-categorical approach that allows every client to be seen as an individual, not a diagnosis. Mariel sees the therapeutic process as reciprocal, with the client’s perspective determining which intervention techniques enter into the clinical partnership.

Micah Fleitman

Micah Fleitman, LPC

Starting individual, couples, or family therapy can feel overwhelming. By the time we seek therapy, we have often carried our pain for years, and it has now become unbearable. Maybe our relationships are falling apart or we are slipping at work. We may be keeping painful emotions at bay with substance use, self-harm, or even thoughts of suicide. We may worry that we are crazy, or that things can never get better.

But the fact that you are here now, reading these words, shows that a part of you is ready for change. It takes courage to face our feelings and work through them to build a better life. When we do face our feelings, we find that everything we are feeling and doing has helped us to survive our past experiences. We learn to give compassion and understanding to ourselves and our loved ones, and recognize that we have each been doing our best. We can then learn new ways of relating with our feelings and our loved ones that brings joy and connection.

If you are ready to take the next step and meet with me, I will listen with warmth, empathy, and respect. Together, we will start to make sense of the issues that have brought you here, and outline a path toward the life and relationships you have yearned for. We will then tailor therapy to you and your family by integrating a variety of emotion focused, cognitive behavioral, systemic, experiential, and psychodynamic therapies.

I provide individual, couples, and family therapy. I am an ally against bigotry and hatred. I work with adolescents and adults and specialize in treating the following concerns:

  • PTSD and Complex Trauma
  • Family and Marital Conflict
  • Depression and Mood Disorders
  • Anxiety and Panic Disorders
  • Addiction and Substance Use
  • Self-Harm and Suicidality
  • ADHD
  • Anger
  • Grief and Loss
  • Parent Coaching

Stacie Davidson, LPC

Stacie Davidson has both professional and personal experience with how difficult, yet brave, it is to let go of the fear of judgment when coming into a counseling setting. Her first goal of therapy with any client is to build a trusting relationship and a safe, non-judgmental space where they can feel free to explore, understand, and challenge themselves.

Once the therapeutic relationship is established, Stacie determines which techniques and interventions will best fit the needs of each client. She specializes in cognitive behavioral therapy which entails exploring automatic and unhelpful thought patterns and restructuring them to be healthier, truer, and more helpful thoughts in living a happy and fulfilled life. This often calls for teaching mindfulness skills, which is a first step in learning to become aware and more in control of thoughts.

In addition to holding a Master’s Degree in Education and Mental Health Counseling, Stacie is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Virginia. Her experience providing counseling in the home, community, school, and office settings to all different demographics gives her a well-rounded ability to connect with people and meet them where they are.

Stacie has confidence that everyone has the strength and ability to make positive changes in their lives. As a guide, she does not make changes for you, but expects you to take responsibility for the changes that you want to make in your life through self-exploration and actively trying new and healthier ways of thinking and living.

Safe environment where clients matter

★★★★★
Reaching out to Thriveworks was a great decision. The service is excellent and the representative matched me with the best counselor for my needs. I have to admit that I was skeptical at first, but I was pleasantly surprised when I met Anita Dean. She is very knowledgeable, professional, and genuinely cares about others. I have observed that she doesn't create cookie cutter plans. Instead, she creates a plan specific to the needs of her her clients. My husband and I lost our sweet family pet of over 15 1/2 years and it also caused the loss of a child to resurface. Anita, has handled my situation with care and assisted me as I walked through the grief process. I am so grateful.

Thriveworks Counseling Charlottesville

Useless

★☆☆☆☆
Receptionist couldn't have been less helpful -- after waiting on hold 20 minutes, I told her I wanted to make an appointment to get assessed for some psychological issues, and she told me, simply, "We don't have anyone who can do that." That was it, no other comment. We just sat there in silence. She was unable to think, work, or put in any effort to help me try to find what I was looking for, or offer any kind of explanation of what she meant. I guess she was busy looking at memes on her phone or something. Or maybe ThriveWorks literally does not assess people for their psychological issues before counseling them? SOOOOO confused and frustrated.

Anita is kind, patient, funny, thoughtful and very trustworthy. We always leave the office better than when we came in. We would highly recommend Anita to anyone who is married; she can help you improve your relationship regardless of how good or bad it is. The office is friendly and inviting, sessions always start on time and the insight we have gained from Anita has proven to be invaluable. We cannot thank enough.
