Alcoholism Therapy and Counseling – Counselors in Grand Rapids
There are many types of alcohol addicts in the world; from the ‘obvious’ public alcoholic to the high functioning addicts that often have powerful jobs and lead very organized lives. Despite this variety in outward appearance, they tend to share many of the same symptoms. All addicts have a physical dependency on alcohol and a mental compulsion to consume it. Drinking far in excess of what is healthy is always the case. The following signs are associated with an addiction:
- Severe withdrawal symptoms.
- Requiring more alcohol for the same effect.
- Drinking at inappropriate times, while driving for example.
- Needing alcohol to feel ‘normal’.
Alcohol Abuse Or Addiction?
It can be hard to tell the difference between someone who abuses alcohol and someone addicted to alcohol. The major distinction is one of control and choice – an alcohol abuser often drinks far in excess of the healthy limits, yet maintains control over his or her choice to drink. An alcohol addict has no such ability; he or she is mentally and physically compelled to consume alcohol. The physical dependency will often cause the addict to experience withdrawal symptoms if no alcohol is consumed.
The Road To Abstinence.
Choosing to quit alcohol is a long road. But all roads have a beginning and with alcohol addiction this beginning is acceptance. Once one has accepted the problem, the healing can begin and a process of detoxification, rehabilitation and finally abstinence can occur.
Rehabilitation in the form of counseling is very often necessary for this newfound abstinence to be maintained. Here at Thriveworks Grand Rapids we work with addicts throughout this process to help keep them on track and maintain their abstinence.
