Roberta Morell, LCSW

** Roberta offers online counseling

Roberta Morell is a licensed clinical social worker with over 25 years of experience in the field. She received her Masters in Social Work from the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. She completed her post-graduate residency at Washington hospital in Washington D.C. and the District of Columbia Day Hospital  in Georgetown.  As an outpatient therapist,  Roberta’s practice consisted primarily of young adults. Her work in the inpatient hospital setting consisted of a multicultural mixed population ranging from young adulthood to geriatrics. Roberta has also been privileged to work with the visually impaired and welcomes the opportunity to treat individuals with physical challenges

In her current practice Roberta provides individual counseling for adults ages 18 and older. All clinical services are provided using a secure telehealth platform allowing clients ease of scheduling and the utmost discretion. Areas of clinical focus include:

  • Depression
  • Blind/Visually impaired
  • Anger management
  • Anxiety
  • Christian Counseling
  • Geriatric
  • Grief/Bereavement
  • Mood Disorders

As the leader of an inpatient multidisciplinary treatment team, the care provided was based on the medical model of care. The medical model presumes that there is something broken that needs to be fixed, rather than people experiencing problems to be worked through that would greatly contribute to a more creative and fulfilling life. Under Roberta’s leadership the team moved to a patent centered model of treatment that used the entirety of a person’s life including goals, concerns, interests, aspirations, relationships and strengths to assist the person in achieving their goals and living a more fulfilling life. She implored a number of therapeutic interventions but all were weighted on cognitive, behavioral and life style changes.

Roberta’s philosophy of practice is rooted in humanistic approach formulated by the philosophies of Martin Buber and Soren Kierkegaard which emphasizes that the therapist assists the person in the change process by communicating their concern, care and interest. The existential theory that utilizes free will, self-determination and search for meaning also undergird her own life and  philosophy of practice. This is not to diminish the importance of skilled therapeutic interventions, but simply to say that if the client’s goals are always in the foreground, the therapeutic relationship coupled with sound therapeutic interventions will yield the desired outcome. This changes the relationship to a partnership. In this partnership clinician and client decide on together on the course of treatment. Roberta has found that having a plan that both parties agree upon and then modifying the plan as needed provides the best outcome.

Though Roberta’s training is heavily based on psychodynamic theory, behavior theory and family systems theory; she has special certifications and training in cognitive behavior therapy, mindfulness, positive psychology, solution focused therapy, brief treatment models, grief and loss, and telehealth.

In her free time Roberta enjoys the water, particularly swimming. She enjoys fishing and gardening with her husband, playing the piano, and playing professionally when she has the opportunity. Roberta teaches several music students who are a delight.  Roberta also loves to paint when she has the time.

Q&A

[learn_more caption="What is your approach to working with young children and families?"] I have learned that the most powerful intervention when working with children is to help parents and caregivers develop the skills and tools needed to support their child. You are the expert on your child. Rather than working with a small child individually for one or two hours a week, we will make more progress if I serve as a guide and coach to parents. I often help parents learn how to manage their child's behaviors at home by providing practical strategies and problem solving support. Working with behavior challenges can be overwhelming for parents and caregivers. Once I get to know a child and learn more about their needs, I often encourage parents to come to sessions without the child so that we can speak candidly about the family's struggles and develop ideas to address the child and parent's needs.[/learn_more]

[learn_more caption="Why are you passionate about offering counseling and coaching services to Millennials?"] Millennials are those of us born roughly between 1982 and 2001, give or take a few years depending on who you ask. Generations share some common traits shaped by their experiences as developing children and young adults during specific points in history. Generational studies suggest that despite coming of age in a recession and struggling with financial burdens, Millennials tend to be pragmatic, optimistic and team oriented. They tend to want to make a difference in the world and help their families, friends and community. Some people even call the Millennials a "Civic Hero" generation. A Civic Hero generation comes around about once every 80 years or so with the last one being The Greatest (or GI) Generation. I honestly believe that Millennials are uniquely positioned in history to help our country and communities heal and grow. Being a young adult can be exciting, confusing and stressful. I want to help Millennials thrive and become their best selves so that they can make the positive difference they want to see in the world![/learn_more]

[learn_more caption="What 3 tips can you offer parents of a youth is questioning his/her sexuality?"]
Stay calm. Family culture and past experiences may affect the way you feel about your child's identify. Try to stay calm and supportive with your child and find other adults that you trust or even a therapist to sort through your own emotions.

Education yourself. Navigating these topics can be confusing for many families. Find educational resources you can trust online and in your community to learn more about what your child is going through. In addition, each child is different, and it will be important for you to listen to your child and learn what is going on with them.

Make sure your child is physically and emotionally safe. While it may seem that our culture is more accepting of differences than it used to be, children who are questioning their sexuality can still be targets for bullying and harassment. Make sure that above all your child is safe emotionally and physically. [/learn_more]

[learn_more caption="What does your initial session with clients involve?"] Usually we get the "boring stuff" out of the way first otherwise known as policy, procedure and billing. I then share that I am a Licenced Professional Counselor which is kind of like a general practitioner for mental health. I know a little bit about a lot of issues and if I don't feel like I am the right person to help you, I will do my best to get you to the right person. I tell folks that I have a collaborative style, meaning that while I may suggest strategies and help you navigate your feelings and thoughts, you will always be the expert on you. I also encourage people to let me know if something isn't working for them throughout the counseling process or if we just aren't a good fit. This is because your relationship with your counselor is going to be the most important contributing factor to your success in therapy. Once new clients have had a chance to ask questions, I ask them to tell me the story of what brings them here. I also ask additional questions to assess the new client's needs. At the end of the session we talk together about the frequency of treatment needed and scheduling. [/learn_more]
