What Is Anxiety?
Anxiety is a multi-faceted thing. It looks different in everyone! Some people experience anxiety is specific situations like seeing a dog, driving, or eating in front of people. This is called specific anxiety and could be sign of a phobia. The more common type of anxiety is technically called Generalized Anxiety Disorder. This is where there is a general sense of wrong and danger pervasive throughout your day. Sometimes it can be connected to a solid thought or situation, and sometimes it can’t.
However, you are experiencing anxiety, it is probably disruptive and discouraging. But it’s not a life-time diagnosis! Treatment is possible. The first step to freedom from anxiety is to recognize the problem. Some common symptoms of anxiety are:
- Rapid heartbeat
- Digestive issues
- Sweaty palms
- Restlessness
- Difficulty sleeping
- Dizziness
- Difficulty concentrating
- Dry mouth
- More frequent urination
- Experience of dread or avoidance of particular situations: social settings, being in the public/crowds/spotlight, new environments
- Obsessive thinking
- Panic attacks
One client described anxiety like this:
“It’s like I’m driving down the highway in 2nd gear while everyone else is in the 5th gear, and I’m just wondering why I can’t keep up.”
Anxiety is exhausting, damaging, and really, really hard. You don’t deserve to keep up with it, and with Thriveworks Red Bank, you don’t have to!
Don’t forget- this list is not exhaustive! Anxiety covers a large expanse of symptoms, so if you are experiencing something that isn’t on that list, still reach out to our Red Bank counselors. There is nothing too big or too small for counseling. If it makes your life better, it’s worth it!
How Does Anxiety Treatment Work?
All counseling must start with a counselor you can trust. At Thriveworks Red Bank, we practice a client-centered philosophy that focuses on your goals, worries, and preferences. Afterall, therapy is about you, not the counselor.
We won’t lie- counseling isn’t always a comfortable experience. You’re working through anxiety, fears, shame, and guilt. Sometimes, it might feel like anxiety gets worse before it gets better. When you’re undoing years of patterns and behaviors, your body and mind will resist. But Thriveworks Red Bank will be with you every step of the way- supporting, encouraging, and teaching. It is you who has to build the life you want, but you don’t have to do it alone.
Some of what you might discuss in an anxiety counseling session include:
- Cognitive Behavioral work (addressing negative thoughts and the behaviors associated with them and putting a stop to them)
- EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing- a very cool new counseling technique that draws on your body’s natural ability to heal)
- Proactive ways to recalibrate your nervous system (healthy foods, meditation, exercise, journaling)
- Assessing physical ramifications and how to address them
- Experiential work to release the past
- Reframing
- Redefining
- Visualization
- Mindfulness
- Group support
About 18% of the United States population is fighting anxiety at any given time. Most of those people will see the day where anxiety is a footnote in their day. You can be one of them! You deserve a life where you are in control, not your anxiety.
