Psychiatric Services in Nottingham, MD

Rachel is debilitated by her work anxiety. Her boss micromanages and is hard to please. He calls her each morning to ask for an update on her work and often hangs up because he isn’t happy with her answer.

Paralyzed with fear, Rachel struggles to stay focused at work but does her best. She experiences uncontrollable racing thoughts throughout each day:

  • When is he going to call and yell at me again?
  • What if I get fired? Today will probably be the day.
  • Should I quit instead? If I quit, I doubt I’ll ever find another job.
  • What do my coworkers think? Do they think I’m totally worthless like him?

Rachel begins to experience anxiety outside of work, too. When she isn’t worrying about her job, she’s worrying about her kids and her husband. Soon, this anxiety begins to affect them as well.

She knows it’s a problem but she doesn’t know what to do about it. The options aren’t so clear-cut, in Rachel’s opinion. Fortunately, her husband talks her into scheduling an appointment with a psychiatrist. He insists that she doesn’t have to go back if she hates it.

Rachel’s psychiatrist is able to assess and diagnose Rachel with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). More importantly, her psychiatrist is able to offer a treatment plan, which involves medication, therapy, and some self-care. Rachel feels a little calmer than she has in a long time.

If you are struggling with anxiety, depression, or another mental disorder, consider talking to a psychiatrist. Psychiatrists are medical doctors and mental health professionals who specialize in the treatment of these mental health conditions. And there are some on our team at Thriveworks Counseling in Nottingham, MD

Our clients can attend their psychiatry appointments online via video or phone call. If you’d like to schedule a session with an online psychiatrist, just call our Nottingham office. We’ll be happy to assist.

When Can Talking to a Psychiatrist Prove Helpful?

Talking to a mental health professional is always encouraged at Thriveworks. Many of us endure challenges that affect our mental and emotional wellbeing, but we fail to repair or manage the damage. A psychiatrist can help you identify these challenges, manage and even prevent them.

Psychiatrists often help people with the following mental disorders:

  1. Anxiety: Anxiety is characterized by uncontrollable, racing thoughts, as you can see in our example from earlier. Some people experience anxiety in many different areas of life, while others experience anxiety in specific areas or as a result of specific events. In any case, a psychiatrist can help.
  2. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): PTSD can result from a traumatic experience and is characterized by a difficult recovery. One might recall memories of their trauma which trigger harmful emotional responses. Both therapy and medication can help one manage these symptoms and heal from their trauma.
  3. Depression: Depression is characterized by a deep despair that makes day to day functioning difficult. Other symptoms include feelings of worthlessness, difficulty sleeping, changes in appetite and weight. Again, both therapy and medication can help those with depression. A psychiatrist can determine which form of treatment might work best.
  4. Eating disorders: Eating disorders include anorexia and bulimia. You might have anorexia if you are trying to lose (or maintain) a low weight by eating too little or not at all. Bulimia, on the other hand, is characterized by vomiting to lose weight or to avoid gaining weight.

If you have symptoms of the above, know that a psychiatrist can offer the help that you need. Not only can they diagnose your condition but they can administer treatment. As we started to explain, treatment might include therapy, medication, or a combination of both. Self-care is also often helpful in managing or recovering from the above.
