Symptoms of ADHD: Does My Child Have ADHD Symptoms?
ADHD isn’t clean-cut. There are different presentations of ADHD, of which have different symptoms. One presentation is characterized by hyperactivity, another is characterized by attention difficulty, and the last is a combination of the two. Now, for official diagnosis, kids who are 16-years-old and younger must display at least 6 symptoms for at least 6 months; and individuals who are 17-years-old and older must display at least 5 symptoms for at least 6 months. Let’s take a closer look at each type, starting with the inattentive type:
- They struggle to concentrate on certain tasks
- They struggle to listen
- They ignore the details
- They don’t follow instructions
- Their space is cluttered
- They lose things often
- They are easily distracted
- They are forgetful
- They aren’t fond of super time-consuming tasks
Now, let’s look at ADHD, the hyperactive/impulsive presentation:
- They are often fidgety
- They can’t sit still for a long time
- They feel restless when they have to sit still
- They’re often loud
- They talk a lot
- They blurt out the answers in class
- They struggle to wait their turn
- They interrupt others when they’re speaking
As you might have guessed, the combined presentation of ADHD is characterized by symptoms of each! If your child is exhibiting symptoms of any kind, it’s important that you talk to a professional, such as the psychologists at Thriveworks Newport News Counseling. We can offer ADHD testing as well as other psychological assessments.
How Does Testing for ADHD Work?
ADHD testing is relatively simple. This simply involves asking the individual questions, observing their behaviors, and gathering additional information about how they think and act. Then, they will compare the information that they gather to ADHD diagnostic criteria, which are as follows…
- The individual exhibits at least a few ADHD symptoms before 12 years old
- They show ADHD symptoms in several settings, such as at school and at home
- Their day to day functioning is negatively affected by these symptoms
- Their symptoms are not better explained by another disorder
“We also have questionnaires for clients to see if they behave similarly to people whom we already know have ADHD,” explains Sean Hayes PsyD of Thriveworks Counseling in Sterling, VA. “These questionnaires may also go to the client’s parents, teachers, or others who know the client well to give us a thorough look at the client’s behaviors from multiple perspectives.” The professionals at Thriveworks Newport News Counseling will get you all set up for this testing and then also walk with you through the next stages, depending on what the test results conclude.
