What is Domestic Violence / Domestic Abuse?
Domestic violence is a pattern of behavior in which one person attempts to establish power or dominance over another through the use of fear or intimidation. In many cases, the abuser uses verbal threats to incite fear or to manipulate another person. Unfortunately, domestic abusers often escalate from verbal threats to the use of physical violence.
This type of violence is not limited to partners who are in a marriage relationship. It can extend to a girlfriend, boyfriend, family member, or child. Domestic violence can happen to anyone.
Where and When Domestic Violence occur?
In most cases, domestic violence occurs in the home. It’s estimated that as many as 60% of all offenses occur at the primary dwelling. Most of the abuse takes place during the evening, between the hours of 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.
The Effects of Domestic Violence:
Domestic violence creates trauma in the life of the victim. If left untreated, this trauma can lead to depression, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, insomnia, and suicide. It can also lead to other destructive behaviors, such as alcohol and drug abuse, cutting, and social isolation. Ultimately, if not stopped, it can lead to death.
More than 3 million children witness some form of domestic abuse each year, leaving them in fear for their safety, as well as the safety of their family members. When exposed to prolonged abuse, these children often begin to normalize the abuse they’re witnessed. These children often experience other health issues, including frequent head and stomach aches, increased absence from school, and difficulty keeping focused on assignments or tasks.
Some victims of domestic violence are faced with the dilemma of remaining in the home with their abuser or moving out. The choice to move out is the leading cause of homelessness among victims of abuse. Family shelter services are often utilized by those who have fallen victim to some form of domestic violence.
