You have never really gotten any help for what you are experiencing because maybe you didn’t realize help was an option. If you or your child is experiencing symptoms of ADHD, we have psychological testing and assessment services both in-person and online.
Thriveworks Alexandria Counseling in Franconia offers different forms of testing, including ADHD. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, is a condition that is characterized by hyperactivity, attention difficulty, and impulsiveness. What Are the Symptoms of ADHD?
There are different types (presentations) of ADHD: inattentive presentation, hyperactive/impulsive presentation, and combined presentation. Each type presents specific symptoms and has certain requirements for being an official diagnosis. Here are the differences between the three:
1. Inattentive Presentation
- Unable to pay close attention to details
- Does not follow through on instructions
- Has trouble organizing tasks and activities
- Is often forgetful in daily activities
- Can be distracted by other stimuli such as loud noises, conversation, etc.
- Difficulty listening when spoken to
- Struggles to stay organized
- Constantly loses things
- Avoids time-consuming tasks and activities
2. Hyperactive/Impulsive Presentation:
- Have difficulty sitting still
- Feel restless or squirm and fidget frequently
- Are constantly “on the go”
- Are impatient
- Touch and play with objects, even when inappropriate for the task at hand
- Act out and don’t contemplate consequences
- Blurt out answers and inappropriate comments
- Struggle with engaging in quiet activities
- Talk constantly
3. Combine Presentation:
- As the name implies, is a combination of inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive presentations
- In children 16-years-old or younger, they must present six or more symptoms of each presentation and must be present
- In people 17-years-old and over, five or more symptoms of each presentation must be present
For the inattentive presentation and hyperactive/impulsive presentation, kids 16-years-old and younger must present six or more of the symptoms, and for those who are 17-years-old and over must present five or more symptoms for 6 months or longer.

How Does ADHD Testing Work?
Sean Hayes PsyD of Thriveworks Counseling in Sterling, VA explains that “sometimes it is hard to tell if someone has ADHD, and testing can help to determine if they do. To test for ADHD, we might give a client tests to see how they think. For example, a person with ADHD might be able to solve puzzles very well, but they may struggle more on tasks requiring them to pay attention. We compare the person’s performances on these tasks to others their own age to see which areas they are weaker or stronger in, and these comparisons can help us to tell if they have the weaknesses we would expect for someone with ADHD.”
After speaking with you and conducting your tests, your psychologist at Thriveworks Alexandria Counseling in Franconia will be able to craft a unique treatment plan to help you not only manage your symptoms but help you live a happier and healthier lifestyle. There’s no reason to continue to suffer day to day and struggle to keep up with your peers and co-workers. Let us help you accurately diagnose what you are experiencing and work together to overcome it.
