  • Confidentiality and acceptance. We understand and appreciate that some things are difficult to talk about, even to your family, friend, pastor or priest.
  • A good chance at a happier, emotionally healthier life.
  • You’ll gain a highly skilled, well-trained Thriveworks counselor to help you gain a better understanding of yourself, your relationships, your job, your family and more.

But Aren’t Men Supposed To Be Strong?

Recognizing the problems in your own life and looking for a place to get help is not a sign of weakness. We help our clients meet men problems head on with straightforward advice and proven solutions. Don’t let yourself stay stuck. If you are struggling with any of the problems on the list above or any other issues in your life, it is time to reach out for help.

So . . . Guy Centered Counseling?

Many men grew up thinking that it wasn’t ok to show emotions, or to experience emotional pain. But we now know that holding in our pain only makes it worse, and can even contribute to problems in our personal life, relationships, family, work, and more. Here at Thriveworks, we don’t like to see so many men struggling silently and alone. Our counselors know that men suffer from depression, anxiety and the other emotional concerns, and that these issues can be treated effectively with counseling. Our therapists want to help men experience fulfilling lives where they’re able to thrive.

Counseling is a proven and time-tested way to address anxiety and depression, and counseling geared to men is especially effective in helping guys improve their quality of life! Your Thriveworks counselor wants to help you feel better about yourself and your life. All men face emotional concerns at some point – don’t let these struggles control your life and happiness. Counseling for men works!

What Exactly Can You Help Me With?

Do you have a problem that’s affecting your ability to function or enjoy your life? Is it even costing you jobs or promotions? Are your relationships suffering? Whatever it is that’s troubling you, it’s important to get help. No matter what issues you’re facing, our caring therapists are here to help. They have years of experience and expertise in helping men just like you with a wide variety of issues and concerns. Some of the men’s problems that we see most often include:

  • Relationship Issues
  • Improved Communication Skills
  • Infidelity (you OR your partner)
  • Marriage, Separation, Divorce
  • Substance Abuse, Addictions
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Anger Management

Anything Else??

Actually, yes, there’s an added benefit to starting and continuing with therapy! I’m sure you don’t need anyone to tell you that statistics show you’re spending almost as many hours at work as you do at home. Maybe even more. But know this: The time you spend working can have a huge impact on your well-being, emotionally and physically. Job-related problems are a great reason to go to counseling. Not only will you gain tools to handle a difficult and stressful job, but researchers found that just 13 weeks of cognitive behavioral training (CBT) can significantly increase job satisfaction and self-esteem. (And YES, Thriveworks therapists are trained in and offer CBT Therapy!) Even more interesting, two full years after therapy, 65% of those who attended therapy were STILL performing at or above average compared to their coworkers who had not attended therapy.

So How Do I Get Started?

Obviously, you won’t experience all of these benefits until you make your first appointment. But it’s not easy to find an experienced therapist who’s skilled at working with men. At Thriveworks, you’ll find a therapist who you’re comfortable with – and one who understands men. This is critical for your therapy to be effective.

Although a study in the journal Psychotherapy suggests that the gender of one’s therapist doesn’t affect the success of the therapy. However, we find that many men are simply more comfortable talking to another man. If that’s the case, Thriveworks Blacksburg Men’s Counseling has on staff, a compassionate and understanding male counselor who specializes in men’s concerns.

Whatever your gender preference, your therapist can help you develop strategies for overcoming negative thought processes and destructive behaviors. Rapport with the therapist is way more important than any specific technique, approach, or treatment modality.

What’s Therapy Like? How Long Will I Need To Go?

Don’t worry. You’re not going on trial. The process is much more informal/casual than you might expect.

Your Thriveworks therapist will do their best to help you feel comfortable so you’re able to express your concerns in your own time, in your own way. You’ll find a safe, non-threatening environment where you’ll be able to get the help you’re looking for.

As for the duration of your therapy, it’s definitely not a one-size-fits-all situation. Some people only need to attend for 2 or 3 months, while others remain in therapy indefinitely. At Thriveworks, we recommend 12 to 15 sessions. Depending on your specific individual issues and concerns, the duration of your therapy may be more or less than that.

At any rate, even when you feel you don’t need to attend therapy any longer, it’s recommended that you keep the Thriveworks phone number in your contacts! Most men find it very helpful to “check in” with their therapist every few months, just to touch base.

Thriveworks Counseling Blacksburg

not what I expected

★★☆☆☆
I found the requirement for giving credit card information over the phone to be a little distressing. I wasn't given a very good reason for needing this information before scheduling an appointment. I was also told I needed to pay a $99 fee to avoid cancellation fees IF I needed to ever cancel without 24 hours notice. I found the scheduling staff to be a little pushy and I was already very anxious about scheduling an appointment. I felt like the focus was more on collecting fees than helping people in need. They also don't take any form of medicaid. I also don't like being required to provide my name and email address in order to be able to post a review.
