Trauma Therapy in Miami, FL—Trauma and PTSD Counseling Help

Charlie was traumatized on her very first flight. She was 5 years old—which means this was 20 years ago—but she remembers it like it was yesterday, nonetheless. After 30 minutes of flight, the plane started to shake sporadically. Charlie’s parents shouted at her to sit still in her seat: “Don’t move, Charlie!” Everyone on the plane braced themselves for the worst. Fortunately, the turbulence subsided after several minutes and the rest of the plane ride was smooth-sailing. But Charlie, and other passengers, suffer with PTSD from that frightening experience to this day.

This is just one example of a traumatic experience. Trauma comes in many other forms, too. Consider: physical or mental abuse; car accidents; natural disasters; harassment; military combat; other violent or near-death experiences. Those who experience traumatic events often develop symptoms of PTSD, or post-traumatic stress disorder… especially if they don’t address the traumatic event and how it’s affected them.

PTSD is a whole-body tragedy, an integral human event of

enormous proportions with massive repercussions.”

–Susan Pease Banitt

What Are the Phases of PTSD?

As mentioned, when traumatic experiences go unaddressed, the individual is likely to experience symptoms of PTSD. In fact, there is an estimated 3.5% of US adults who are affected by PTSD and 1 in 11 individuals who will get diagnosed with this disorder. Here’s what PTSD looks like:

  1. Impact: This is the first stage of PTSD, which an individual enters shortly after their trauma. They might experience shock, fear, guilt, anxiety, and hypervigilance.
  2. Rescue: This is the next stage of PTSD. The individual will start to accept and acknowledge what has happened to them. One might experience a wide range of mental and physical effects including numbness, anger, despair, flashbacks, and nightmares.
  3. Intermediate recovery: In the next stage of PTSD, the victim starts to adjust and return to “normal.” This stage also involves addressing new challenges that arise as a result of their trauma, such as their distrust in other people if they were a victim of assault.
  4. Long-term reconstruction: This final phase involves reconstructing one’s life. The individual might move through fear, depression, resentment as they work through concerns about their future. This stage also involves opening up about their trauma and coming to terms with it.

If you have experienced trauma, it is so important that you allow yourself to open up about it and welcome support from others. Your friends and your family members can provide you with support, which can help you to heal from the experience (this is specifically crucial in the intermediate recovery stage). In this stage, the individual is either overwhelmed by the support that they receive, or they are disappointed by the lack thereof.

The trauma therapists and PTSD counselors at Thriveworks Miami Counseling are here to offer this support. Sometimes, in addition to the support that you (hopefully) receive from your loved ones, you need some help and guidance from a professional. There is no shame to be had in receiving mental health help. Please reach out to us if you have determined a need for trauma therapy.
