How Does IQ Testing Work?
IQ testing is short for intellectual quotient testing and assesses one’s intellectual potential (as opposed to performance). “Intelligence testing alone can be helpful for finding areas where one excels in or needs extra support. This can be helpful for learning how to be more effective at work or school, or to find what might be a good career path,” says Sean Hayes PsyD of Thriveworks Counseling in Sterling, VA. There are different IQ tests, some of the most popular being:
- Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale: This IQ test assesses several cognitive factors, including quantitative reasoning, fluid reasoning, and working memory.
- Peabody Individual Achievement Test: This test is designed for those between 5 and 22 years. It uses a survey to measure one’s achievements in school and returns an average grade range.
- Differential Ability Scales: These tests are designed for kids and adolescents, as well, as they measure cognitive abilities and can include other measurements, such as one’s reading, math, and spelling level/skills.
- Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale: This test is designed for adults (but can also be used for older adolescents) and measures their intelligence and cognitive ability.
An average IQ score is 100. Scores that exceed 100, but fall below 130 are considered high intelligence, while a score of 130 or above signifies extreme intelligence. Now, scores that fall below 100 are considered to be below average; however, they don’t cause serious concern until they reach the 70-75 and below range. Research shows that kids diagnosed with an intellectual disability typically receive a score between 55 and 70.
If you or your child receives a below average score, your Thriveworks Manassas psychologist can order additional testing to confirm diagnosis of an intellectual disability (if necessary) and also offer a treatment plan. We are here to guide and support you through testing and the treatment process.
What Exactly Is an Intellectual Disability?
Limited intellectual functioning and/or adaptive behavior signifies an intellectual disability. Together, intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior skills fuel our reasoning, learning, problem-solving skills and enable us to complete everyday tasks. Intellectual disabilities present at an early age; however, sometimes people don’t receive testing until much later in life. When IQ testing is administered, the individual can better understand how to capitalize on their strengths and improve weaker areas.
Now, IQ tests test one’s intellectual functioning, while other tests assess one’s adaptive behavior, which is another important factor when it comes to intellectual disabilities. Adaptive behavior includes one’s conceptual, practical, and social skills—all of which prove important to daily living.
