What Does ADHD Testing Look Like?
The psychologists as well as other mental health professionals at Thriveworks McLean can conduct ADHD testing, which simply involves gathering important information about how you think and behave. They then compare this data to the criteria for ADHD. Criteria is as follows:
- You present several symptoms before age 12
- You present these symptoms in more than one setting, such as at home and work
- You struggle to function in a normal day to day basis due to your ADHD symptoms
- Your symptoms don’t better match those of another mental health condition
Sean Hayes PsyD of Thriveworks Counseling in Sterling, VA says that psychologists and other providers “also have questionnaires for clients to see if they behave similarly to people whom we already know have ADHD. These questionnaires may also go to the client’s parents, teachers, or others who know the client well to give us a thorough look at the client’s behaviors from multiple perspectives.” If you or your child are exhibiting ADHD symptoms, it’s important that you receive testing so that you can then begin treatment if diagnosed with ADHD.
