This is a very old thread, but I'd just like to say that I've had similarly terrible experiences with EMRs, and frankly, in my private practice, I use paper files and love it. It's faster, easier, and just plain better. If you have a big practice, fine. If your a sole practitioner and don't take insurance, I can't imagine how this could be helpful at all. Open file, fill out note. Close file. Credit card information is on file, and it's automatically billed via my credit card vendor. If I need to fax information (very, very rare), I plop it down on the fax machine - takes 2 minutes. I never have to wait for things to download, never have to search a screen. I know the geography of my files like the back of my hand - including that sticky note that I put on that page a year ago. What could be easier than that?

I appreciate reading this article. However, I find that this did not speak to websites more suited for psychotherapist (smaller practices; not physicians or folks in a group practice). I was recently told about TherapyNotes (therapynotes.com). I find that this is helping and I just started using it. It is saving a lot of time with streamlining progress note/treatment plans/etc.

Great information here and sad to here many of these horror stories about EHR. I think the issue is that many mental health EHRs are built on legacy platforms and not modern software frameworks. Due to the low price point, many EHR companies are also not putting in resources to come after the out-patient mental health market.

At TheraNest, we are changing that.
Anthony, we would like for you to check out TheraNest at http://www.theranest.com . We not only want you to see how smoothly it works, but we hope it can change your mind about EHR software for therapists.

We designed it to be easy to use, fast - even though it is web/cloud based, you get the feel of a desktop most of the time.

We also made it affordable. Affordability is actually part of the mission because of the experiences that led us to build TheraNest. Here is how seriously we take affordability: we don't charge extra per provider, we charge based on number of clients because we want to grow with you. No long term contracts either. We keep our clients by making them happy.
It has a ton of features from credit card processing, to automated appointment reminders to the ability to build custom forms. And we continue to improve and make it better.

If you're interested in giving it a test ride, let me know, or sign up for our free trial.

Thanks for a great blog by the way.

Thanks for a very informative blog.

This is a very interesting article, and I appreciate this information. As a supervisor for counselors-in-training, I have often been asked "how does one take a good progress note?" Given this, I developed a systematic format for progress notes and, since I myself get overwhelmed with all the paperwork, I invested money to turn the paper progress note into an e-tool. I welcome any feedback. For me, having an efficient and formatted way to keep my progress notes in an online, secure format has been helpful, and I hope other counselors may find this useful as well.

Hi Anthony,

I trained over 100 psychiatrists, psychologists and therapists on an EHR rollout at our community mental health center, and because of that experience, I've been fascinated watching the EHR/EMR explosion due to the government incentives.

I really appreciate you sharing your experience (and that of other private practice clinicians) re implementing these solutions at the private practice level.

I'm wondering if the implementation of EMR will be strategic, at some point, in that it may enable private practice clinicians to get more referrals from MD's with this capability.

If the overall goal of all of this is the ability to exchange clinical patient data between providers and systems to achieve continuity of care, it seems that those who can and do implement will perhaps have better referral positioning than others.

Your thoughts?

Thanks for the informative article,

Becky
