We have been having some dysfunctionality in our family lately, especially with our teenage son. Counseling might be a way to help us heal these relationships. It's definitely important that we find a therapist we can feel comfortable with. We are quite religious as a family, so perhaps finding someone that could incorporate that into our counseling would be good. Thanks for sharing, I hadn't thought of that.

I thought you brought up a good point in asking how important is it that your therapist matches you in certain characteristics, like race and gender. You also mention that there is a need to feel "known" by your therapist, which helps you to feel more open in the space. I also think that everyone can benefit from talking to a therapist every once in a while-- not just people who are severely suffering. Everyone has stress and pressures that they might not even realize that a therapist might be able to uncover.

It's been a while since I have gone to some form of counseling. I remember that it was actually a pleasant experience, however, I am no longer in the area where my previous counselor was. That said, I am trying to grab an idea of what type of counselor I would enjoy. Like you said in guide #2, I much prefer a "straight up, no chaser approach" for counseling. I will have to identify some therapists and enter a session with them.
